Imagining the Post-Museum

Bannister Fletcher Global Fellowship, University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP, https://www.london.ac.uk/institute-paris) with in London, Whitechapel Gallery, Mosaic Room and Sarah Parker Remond Center UCL and in Paris, Cité internationale des arts.

The program will have two focuses. One will be to look at the ways in which established museums— both cities house prestigious institutions that are facing challenges about the origins of their collections, their narratives and practices of conservation—seek to contribute to the public debate and public policy on racism, inclusion, diversity and solidarity. We will study how grass roots movements, young curators and activists are taking the institutions to task about their public policies. Second, we will study how community-led innovations (galleries, cultural-art centers) are reshaping urban cultures, generating new forms of collecting, representing and archiving. How are they anchored in local or transnational actions, serving the neighborhood communities by listening to their needs and desires. Finally, how, in both cases, the experiences and practices developed in London can benefit similar structures in Paris, and vice-versa.
